What required the SFOH at 1600 hrs? I have an SR20 of similar vintage, around 1100 hrs on the engine. So far going strong. I'm trying to learn what to do to keep it that way.
We bought the plane a hundred or two hours before that TT. Over the proceeding year one or two cylinders had failed. We replaced them but then figured it wasn't worth the risk and hassle of more failing at unexpected times and decided to go with the engine replacement. Plus oil consumption was high (although this likely would have gone away with new cylinders).
Other cylinders had already been replaced before we took ownership so there might have been a bit of a period in the plane's earlier history where it was sitting idle and some corrosion may have set in but that's just speculation on my part.
FWIW, if you take care of the IO-360ES engine, you can go way past TBO. I got 3,200 hours out of my first engine (all cylinders replaced over time) and currently have 1,800 hours on the replacement (no cylinders replaced).
