Reflections on COPA 2.0

This is a wonderful day. With the hard work of COPA volunteers and the considerable resources from the COPA treasury, COPA 2.0 was born last night. As many of you know I have pushed for this wonderful new community tool for some time as a COPA member, including introducing some interesting ways to persuade the process along. With Curt Sanford's leadership he has made it happen.

Most of you are likely still in a state of confusion as you browse around COPA 2.0. Don't worry the fog will lift and you will discover what a wonderful tool this will be for our worldwide COPA community.

Online communities have come a long way from the days when I first started using my Apple II with a 300 baud modem to interact with the old BBS's. With the Internet in the mid 1990's, interactive forums were born including the software that supported COPA 1.0. But this is 2008 and CommunityServer 2008, the engine driving COPA 2.0, is now state of the art. COPA 2.0 is much more than a forum, it is the foundation for an integrated community. But more importantly once you get to know it the application is very user friendly. I anticipate many of our beloved "COPA Lurkers" will burst forth now with this new software and be come "bidirectional" in their user experience.

I want to thank Curt Sanford, the board of directors of COPA and all the COPA volunteers who took the risk to push the envelope on this new initiative. We have just begun to have fun.

Bob,

Thank you for being so persistent and helping to guide us in the right direction. Definitely the look and feel and the user interface of this integrated system are wonderful.

As with any software it takes a (steep) learning curve to get to the right state of mind and to become comfortable with the new surroundings. I find that system is easy to navigate, but gives you a few clues on functionality.

For example there is a big font for FORUM, yet Blog font is sooo small that it is easy to miss. Once in the forum, there is no clues on which form has how many un-read threads. Not until one presses Aviation forum text (which is very small) will you see a list of 5 last posts. Still no there are clues on how many other posts are being there that I have not read yet.

Yet again, there is another small text “Not Read” which allows you to drill even further.

For some reason to fit the most information on a page, the font size has been reduced to the absolute minimum. I would strongly recommend increasing it by 1 or 2 sizes so it is more comfortable to read.

With all that said, it is an awesome improvement. I am looking forward for thing to come! I hope Curt gets enough sleep this weekend!

Bob,

Confusion state for sure at least. Lost for a moment for sure.

I understand the need of update to avoid the collapse of the ancient forum and to add new feature.

But COPA forum was an amazing source of information, very easy to find in fact, thanks to the quality of contributions, the number of threads. It was fantastic to have one such present and past so easily approachable return of experience.

Following the forum each day did not need a big effort and did not ask a lot of time.

We had a very efficient tool.

I am a bit frustrated by the aspect of the new forum. Of course it's because it's different and new and my brain is not as agile as it was in the past.

But every day, when I want to read the new information which interests me I have to review and switch between at least 10 different forums, then pick up the interesting threads, search in several pages where I have ended my readings for the last time and then click on the button "mark all read" to pass to the next forum. If I have forgotten to click on this button, the next time I will read this forum I will be polluted by the treads I have not read the last time because I was not interested.

And if I use the "unread" function in the "aviation" forum no way to filter out the forums that I do not want to follow ( LSA, Place Route etc have no interest for me because of no utility in Europe). Further more there is no way to "mark all read" in this function at the end of the reading in order to clean the space for the next time.

Actually the bandwidth is bigger for sure, but the tool is less effective to hear the sounds without background noise.

Since the "Apple 2", the Macintosh, the IBM PC I have learnt that sometimes progress follows oblique ways...

So Far, So Good!

I had a problem logging in, but with Curt's attentive help last evening, it finally allowed me to "Log In', and yes, it is different, but so far is quite a bit faster and the format is a bit more complex, but still user friendly.    Congrats,    COPA Volunteers!
